A two-way mirror is coated with a thin layer of almost transparent metal. The result is a mirrored surface that reflects some light and allows the rest to pass through. Light always passes evenly in both directions. However, when one side is well lit and the other is dark, the darker side is difficult to see from the well-lit side, as it is masked by the brighter reflection of the illuminated side.

Be sure to peel off the thin protective film from both sides before use. The side with blue protective cover may have a second transparent protective cover underneath. Protection may be scratched, but the underlying mirror should not be scratched. The blue cover is on the reflective side, the transparent cover is located on the back of the mirror.
The scratch-resistant version has a coating that protects the non-reflective side of the mirror. The side with this scratch-resistant coating should withstand some wear and tear. Be sure to show the non-reflective side in the direction that is used most often. The side with reflective coating can be easily damaged, so avoid cleaning it with anything if you can.
